The key to a clean, fresh smelling home is not getting rid of your beloved four-legged children. The answers is always to vacuum, vacuum and then vacuum again. 

You can also try keeping a towel by the door to wipe all four paws each time your pet ventures outside and clean their paws again after they eat. Treat you pet like a toddler who never really gets past potty training.  Even the best pet will occasionally make a mistake. And it’s usually right by the door to the outside.
Remember to give your pet the opportunity to relieve themselves, even if they are not asking to go outside.
